How to tell when a rib is fractured

Rib fracture can be determined by typical symptoms, imaging and laboratory tests. 1. Typical symptoms: When a rib is fractured, the broken end of the fracture will stimulate the intercostal nerves, which will make the patient feel chest pain. Chest pain is a typical symptom of rib fracture, and the patient will feel the pain worsening when taking a deep breath or rotating the position. Rib fracture may also lead to thoracic deformity, such as indentation or protrusion. 2. Imaging examination: including X-ray, CT examination, etc. Among them, chest X-ray is preferred. Among them, chest X-ray is the preferred examination option, which can visualize the fracture line and displacement of the fracture. When the result of X-ray can not make a clear diagnosis, CT examination is needed in order to observe the rib fracture which is not obviously dislocated or not dislocated. 3. Laboratory examination: When the rib is fractured, it is possible that the fracture end will puncture the blood vessel and lead to bleeding. In the routine blood test, a decrease in hemoglobin level can be seen. The diagnosis of rib fracture needs to be carried out by specialized doctors, and patients should not diagnose on their own. When the patient experiences uncomfortable symptoms, he/she should seek medical treatment promptly.
