Self-exercise and self-care for patients with facial palsy

Self-rehabilitative functional exercise The patient sat in a sitting position, facing a mirror, and performed motor training for the frontalis, frown, orbicularis oculi, paranasal facial muscles, orbicularis oris, and buccal muscles. ①Frontal, frown and orbicularis oculi muscle training – the patient placed the middle finger of one hand parallel to the affected side of the eyebrow and performed upward and downward eyebrow lifting, frowning and eye opening training, while the other hand inhibited the movement of the healthy side; ②Nasal root muscle training – the patient placed the middle finger of one hand on the inner end of the affected side of the eyebrow tip, and the other (3) training of orbicularis orientalis and buccal muscles – the patient should do a quick rubbing movement from the corner of the mouth to the front of the ear on the affected side with one hand, and inhibit the movement of the healthy side with the other hand, and the training should be carried out according to the rhythm of gymnastics, and each movement should be done in two or four. After the training, the patient practiced the random movements of the paralyzed muscle in front of the mirror, such as smiling, closing the eyes, opening the eyes, wrinkling the forehead, showing the teeth, whistling, puffing the cheeks, and repeating each action. The above exercises should be performed 2 to 3 times a day for 20 minutes each time. Self-care Patients should rest properly, keep their face warm, wear a mask when they go out, and do not go near the window when they sleep to avoid wind and cold; because the eyes on the sick side cannot be closed, they should wear eye shields when they sleep and go out, and use antibiotic eye drops or eye ointment (such as Runshu eye drops for external use) to protect the cornea and prevent conjunctivitis; rinse the mouth after eating, remove the food residue between the affected cheek teeth, and keep the mouth clean. Keep the mouth clean; give nutritious, easy-to-digest soft food, prohibit smoking and alcohol, and avoid stimulating food.
