How soon to exercise after lumbar fusion

After lumbar spine fusion surgery, as long as the condition is stable, you can start exercising on the same day, but the strength training for the low back muscles needs to start after 4 weeks after surgery. Postoperative 0~2 weeks: after awake from anesthesia after surgery, you can start ankle pump exercises, quadriceps and hamstrings isometric exercises, passive and active straight leg raising exercises, abdominal muscles, low back muscles isometric contraction exercises and double bridge exercises. Postoperative 3~4 weeks: after confirming the stability of internal fixation by X-ray film, patients can wear waist circumference to stand and walk on the ground, but not too much walking, and need to pay attention to prevent dizziness, nausea, black eyes, and other cases of upright hypotension. In addition, weight-bearing training, balance exercises, sitting training, etc., each training does not exceed 10 minutes. Postoperative 4~8 weeks: Lower limb training can be carried out, including supine leg flexion, aerial cycling, static squatting, straddling exercises, and gradually increase the standing time; low back muscle exercises, including Feiyan exercises, prone four-point support, spinal extension and flexion, lateral flexion and rotational mobility training. Postoperative 8 weeks: Gradually resume normal standing and sitting time, and remove the lumbar protection according to the doctor’s requirements. Perform seated turning exercises, resisted lateral flexion exercises and so on. Rehabilitation training for patients after lumbar spine fusion needs to be carried out under the doctor’s guidance, and at the same time, attention must be paid to the protection of lumbar spine in daily life, in order to consolidate the effect of exercises and treatments, and avoid recurrence.
