Zhu Danxi (朱丹溪) was named Zhenheng (震亨), Yanxiu (彦修), and Danxi (丹溪). He was born in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province. Born in 1282 and died in 1358, he was one of the famous medical doctors in China during the Jin-Yuan period. He called dizziness “head dizziness” and believed that “no phlegm does not make dizziness”. He believed that phlegm can cause head dizziness by moving fire and disturbing the clear air; also, dizziness can be caused by damp phlegm obscuring the clear orifices and not raising the clear yang. What does dizziness refer to? He said that dizziness is dizziness and spinning, not daring to open the eyes, like standing in a rocking boat, and wanting to fall down when he gets up. What is phlegm? Chinese medicine believes that phlegm is the product of the body’s fluid metabolism, divided into tangible phlegm and invisible phlegm. Tangible phlegm refers to the phlegm coughing up from lung diseases; invisible phlegm is invisible and hidden in the internal organs and meridians. The production of phlegm is related to the inability of the spleen to transport water and dampness, so there is a saying in Chinese medicine that “the spleen is the source of phlegm”. Therefore, to treat dizziness caused by damp phlegm, the basic method is to strengthen the spleen and transform phlegm. Danxi said: for those who have wind due to hot phlegm, it is also necessary to clear heat and phlegm, quench wind and stop dizziness. In addition, phlegm is in the body and goes in and out with the Qi. Therefore, Chinese medicine treatment of phlegm evidence also needs to add drugs to regulate qi and transport phlegm. By eliminating phlegm, Chinese medicine can make the qi rise and fall, so that the clear yang rises and the cloudy yin falls, so that the brain can be cleared and the dizziness can be removed.
