Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cerebrovascular Disease

The administration of oxygen under high pressure is called hyperoxia therapy. To complete this treatment, there must be an enclosed device called a hyperbaric chamber. The patient is treated in a hyperbaric chamber filled with oxygen and pressurized for one hour at a time, 12 times for one session. This therapy can treat many diseases, and is more effective in cerebrovascular disease. Why can hyperbaric oxygen treat cerebrovascular disease? This is because regardless of hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease or ischemic cerebrovascular disease, the basic pathological basis is cerebral circulation and cerebral metabolic disorders as well as cerebral ischemia and hypoxia, and the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy: 1. can increase the partial pressure of blood oxygen, improve and correct hypoxic brain tissue damage. 2. It can increase the partial pressure of oxygen in brain tissues and cerebrospinal fluid, so that the oxygen supply to the hypoxic area around the hemorrhagic foci or infarct area can be increased. At the same time, it can also make the normal brain tissue vasoconstriction and anti-stolen blood, thus increasing the blood flow in the ischemic area. 3.It can lower the intracranial pressure, improve the body’s vital activity and waking state, and help the recovery of consciousness disorder. 4.It has a significant effect on PGI2 and TXA2 in acute ischemic brain tissue, causing prostaglandins to increase significantly and thromboxane to decrease, and can improve the utilization of glucose in damaged brain tissue and increase the activity of HATPase in brain mitochondria. Therefore, hyperbaric oxygen has good efficacy on the recovery of impaired consciousness as well as motor and speech functions caused by cerebrovascular disease. However, at present, hyperbaric oxygen therapy for cerebrovascular disease is considered to be an adjunctive method and not a substitute for other therapies. Other therapies should still be continued along with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
