It is not recommended to flush the eyes with sea salt water as it may cause eye discomfort.
The sea salt water currently sold has more trace elements compared to normal saline, and the concentration may also vary, which can be categorized into 0.9% isotonic solution or 2.2%~2.3% hypertonic solution. Sea saline is mainly used for nasal care to relieve nasal discomfort. It has not yet been used for rinsing the eyes and its safety is uncertain, so it is not recommended for rinsing the eyes.
If the concentration of sea salt water is too high, it is easy to irritate the cornea and conjunctiva, resulting in discomfort in the patient’s eyes, such as eye stinging and foreign body sensation. If the patient’s eyes enter a foreign body, the patient can choose saline to rinse the foreign body in the eyes to relieve the discomfort symptoms.
Patients with worsening eye discomfort are advised to seek prompt medical attention to assess their condition and follow doctor’s instructions for treatment.
