Why choose all-ceramic restorations

Porcelain (gold porcelain) restorations were once the predominant aesthetic restorative material. Porcelain restorations are first fabricated with a metal base, and then ceramic is placed on top of the metal base. Due to the existence of this layer of opaque metal base material, gold porcelain restorations on the refraction effect of light, transmission effect and natural teeth are bound to have a gap, it is difficult to achieve satisfactory aesthetic results. All-porcelain restorations are composed of ceramics, all materials have greater or lesser translucency, there is no completely opaque metal base, optical properties similar to natural teeth, translucency and a good sense of hierarchy, so it is easier to obtain and natural teeth closer to the aesthetic effect. And all-ceramic restorations avoid many possible adverse effects due to metal, excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, has become the mainstream way of aesthetic restoration of anterior teeth. All-ceramic materials commonly used in clinical practice are divided into hot die-cast glass ceramics, permeable ceramics, dense alumina ceramics and dense zirconia ceramics. The performance characteristics and clinical indications of each type of material vary. To ensure the restorative effect, the dental clinician should consider and correctly select the material in terms of its strength, translucency, color shading and price in order to obtain the aesthetic effect and reliable long-term success rate.
