When can I get a veneer?

One of the most common types of patients that prosthodontists see in clinical practice is the patient who comes in for advice on the timing of restorative dentistry. The prosthodontist is responsible for the overall follow-up of the endodontic, periodontal and post-surgical work and needs to have a strong sense of the big picture to oversee the treatment. “Seeing the big picture”, “seeing the small picture” and “seeing the big picture” – these are the best descriptions of a good These descriptions best describe a good prosthodontist, and therefore, the appropriate timing of restoration after various treatments has become a mandatory part of our curriculum. The following suggestions will be made for the appropriate timing of restoration in various cases for your colleagues’ reference: 1. Appropriate timing of restoration after root canal treatment Root canal treatment is one of the basic treatment modalities of endodontics for diseases such as endodontic and combined endodontic and periodontal lesions, usually involving large dental defects, and the tooth may be restored by filling, crown restoration or high inlay after treatment. In general, the timing of restoration after root canal treatment is determined by the recovery of the tooth, postoperative maintenance and other factors: ① The recovery of the tooth: filling or restoration can be performed one week after a successful conventional root canal treatment to restore the form and function of the tooth. However, if the individual patients with poor conditions (such as more serious periapical cysts, joint loosening, abscesses and other cases of infection, perhaps a slower recovery, can be observed for 2 weeks before restoration; ② Post-operative maintenance: the tooth loses vitality after root canal treatment, requiring patients to pay attention to diet, should not eat too stimulating food, and in dental cleaning and maintenance need to pay more attention to good oral cleaning and maintenance, to reduce bacterial infection Phenomenon, recovery, restoration of dental health, can be appropriate according to the specific situation, shorten the time of filling; on the contrary, the teeth with poor periodontal condition can only be restored after the patient is well maintained. 2, the appropriate time for restoration after tooth extraction This is a situation that bothers the most patients. If a few teeth are missing, it does not affect the bite yet; however, many elderly people have no teeth or a small number of teeth remaining, which will seriously affect their normal function, and the need to restore the integrity of the teeth as soon as possible is particularly urgent at this time. According to the type of denture, it can be divided into immediate denture, removable denture, fixed denture, full denture and implant denture. Except for the immediate denture which is a finished product or can be worn immediately after the veneer is placed in the treatment plan, the timing of restoration of each type of denture is related to the remaining roots, crowns, intact teeth, hard and soft tissues and other factors in the oral cavity. ① Immediate denture is a finished denture that is made chair-side, or developed in the plan and processed before extraction, usually a removable denture. This type of denture can be worn 30 minutes after extraction to protect the extraction wound, prevent the adjacent teeth from tilting toward the gap, preserve the gingival height and periodontal morphology, and maintain the aesthetic appearance; ② The movable denture can be restored about 3 months after the extraction if other conditions in the oral cavity meet the requirements for the movable denture; overseas literature has reported that in some cases, 6 months is the time for complete stability of the bone reconstruction. If the extracted tooth is a residual root, the time can be changed according to the specific situation, and 1 month can also meet the requirements of some special patients; ③ Full denture, the same as the movable denture, is also about 3 months after the last extraction (residual root, remaining root, etc. should be changed according to the specific situation), the prerequisite is that all other conditions in the oral cavity meet the requirements for full denture. It is important to note that full dentures require a higher alveolar ridge morphology and bone volume, so if there are obvious bone spurs and bone protrusions, they need to be treated by another surgery, and it is best to wait for 6 months. If the implantation is not immediate, the implantation can be performed 4-6 months after the extraction of the tooth position to be implanted, when the alveolar bone in the extraction wound is completely healed and other conditions meet the requirements of the implantation denture. In case of site preservation, GBR or other preliminary procedures, the waiting time is longer; for distance, site preservation is performed 6-9 months after the extraction before the implant I procedure. The timing of restorations is a judgment that requires solid basic knowledge and, moreover, extensive clinical experience to back it up. It is the responsibility and happiness of every doctor to better provide timely and on-point restorative treatment to patients.
