The temporomandibular joint and the dental row are a unified functional whole, and problems with either side can cause dysfunction of the oromandibular system. However, orthodontists have always focused only on the alignment of the teeth in the mouth, often ignoring a series of problems in the temporomandibular joint and their adverse effects, such as the joint popping when opening and closing the mouth, pain in the joint area, soreness in the masticatory muscles and migraine headaches, etc. Joint disorders can gradually cause joint displacement, thus causing changes in the intra-oral occlusal relationship, resulting in cases of relapse after orthodontic treatment. Therefore, it is necessary for orthodontic treatment to consider joint disorders and treat them accordingly. The RW concept of orthodontic treatment introduced into China in recent years is a mature treatment system that focuses on the overall orthodontic function. The RW concept is the Roth/Williams treatment concept, which is an orthodontic treatment concept jointly proposed by internationally renowned orthodontists Dr. Ron Roth and Dr. Robert Williams. This concept has been actively promoted by RWISO (RW International Orthodontic Union), and has been introduced into the orthodontic field in China in the past one or two years, and has received wide attention. The difference between the RW concept and the traditional orthodontic treatment concept is that it pays more attention to the overall function of the oral and jaw system, emphasizing that the teeth and the temporomandibular joint achieve a good and stable state at the same time. After the introduction of RW concept in our clinical work, we pay attention to the examination of orthodontic patients with TMJ disorders, take CT and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the joints for patients with joint problems, find out the problems through measurement and analysis and propose corresponding solutions, such as wearing an occlusal plate to alleviate or completely solve the joint disorders of patients, and then adjust the teeth to a state of good alignment and function to achieve the long-term function of the oral and maxillofacial system. The overall function of the oral and maxillofacial system is stabilized in the long term and the risk of recurrence is reduced. Due to the complex and complicated examination and treatment method of RW concept, the cost is high, and the treatment process is time-consuming, and the patient has discomfort at the initial stage of wearing the plate, etc., the number of units carrying out this treatment is still relatively small, but its own value, especially the advantages of long-term maintenance of the patient’s curative effect, is obvious, so our orthodontic department of the Third Hospital insists on carrying out this treatment, and gradually optimizes and improves the treatment method, such as taking the We have also recently standardized the treatment procedures and fees, so that more and more patients are aware of and accept the RW concept for orthodontic treatment of joints and teeth.
