Is sodium valproate an antiepileptic drug

Sodium valproate is a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug indicated for all types of seizures, for simple partial or complex partial seizures, myoclonic seizures, and grand mal seizures. It can be used for monotherapy or combined with other drugs at the same time. Common adverse reactions are relatively mild, mainly gastrointestinal reactions, manifesting as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes dyspepsia, leading to gastric distention as well as loss of appetite, and in severe cases, patients may experience painful gastrointestinal cramps. In female patients there is a possibility of menstrual cycle changes. There are also rare side effects, including hair loss, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, headache, mild tremor, ataxia, restlessness and irritability. Monitoring of blood and liver function is required if taken for a long period of time and may result in elevated transaminases, with occasional acute hepatic necrosis in severe patients.
