Dilators are often used in plastic surgery, what is a dilator? In short, it is a silicone rubber capsule that is used to expand the skin to enlarge the skin area and repair the defect. Dilators are used to treat large nevi, hemangiomas, scars, and other post-excision skin defects on the head, face, trunk, and extremities. Compared to traditional skin grafting, the expander has many advantages, such as softer texture of the expanded skin, good color, consistent thickness with the skin of the defect area, no secondary scars in the donor area, etc. The disadvantages are the long repair cycle, which usually takes about 4 months, going through two surgeries with several injections in between, etc. Despite these shortcomings, the use of dilators for postoperative repair of head and facial scars, nevi, and hemangiomas is still preferred because the end result is far superior to that of skin grafting.
