What is threatening the health of the “little thunderbolts”?

One afternoon, an urgent phone call rang, and a child with respiratory distress came to the emergency department for consultation. The otolaryngologist immediately rushed to the emergency department and heard a loud snoring sound from afar, only to see a parent shaking the child in his arms. The child was about 5 years old, with a gray face, loud snoring and poor breathing. The child woke up easily, and his face gradually returned to normal. Seeing the doctor come in, the child’s parents hurriedly said: “Doctor, save my child, quickly give him surgery, he has a cold for the past two or three days, the snoring is getting louder and louder, holding his breath more and more serious ……” Some people may ask, snoring is also a disease? Why do parents ask for surgery? The snoring of children in their sleep at night, commonly known as ” snoring ” ” small thunder, is a relatively common phenomenon in daily life. Many parents do not take this seriously. Many parents are not aware that snoring in children may indicate certain underlying diseases, and the medical term “snoring” is called “obstructive sleep apnea hypoventilation syndrome”. Generally speaking, healthy children do not snore during sleep. The most common cause of sleep snoring in children is obstruction of the upper airway, mostly caused by tonsils and adenoids, other rhinitis, sinusitis, deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, nasal tumors, nasal foreign bodies, maxillofacial deformities, and excessive obesity, which can also cause obstruction of the upper airway and cause sleep snoring. In addition, when children sleep snore, the upper airway is affected by enlarged tonsils and, or adenoids, narrowing the upper airway, which can cause apnea (breath-holding) and lack of oxygen during sleep. In terms of superficial effects, children’s sleep snoring is prone to sinusitis and otitis media, which affects the child’s health. In addition, children will open their mouths to breathe when snoring because of the lack of oxygen, which may also cause children’s teeth development malformations, wide facial eye spacing and other negative effects that are difficult to reverse. In the long run, the pituitary gland secretes growth hormone, which is a crucial part of a child’s growth and development, and this hormone is mainly produced during sleep at night. If the child does not get enough sleep for a long time, the pituitary gland secretion will be stagnant, which will certainly lead to the child’s development being hindered. Compared to children of the same age, “Little Thunder” is shorter, mentally stunted, inattentive in class during the day, odd personality, and poor academic performance. Because children snore during sleep, they are not aware of it, and because they are still young, it is difficult to judge their symptoms. Therefore, when a child snores in sleep, it is actually a danger signal to mom and dad. At present, the clinical treatment for children’s sleep snoring is mainly surgery to remove the enlarged tonsils and adenoids, and to treat concurrent rhinitis and sinusitis, with an efficiency of over 90%. For children with poor surgical results or those who are unwilling to undergo surgery, or those who are older or obese, they can also be treated with continuous positive pressure ventilation via the nose. Through treatment, most children can return to normal. In terms of prevention, the main focus is on the tonsils and adenoids, avoiding colds and cold, actively treating rhinitis and sinusitis, exercising properly to strengthen resistance, and paying attention to a balanced diet to avoid excessive obesity due to overnutrition. More importantly, parents must develop the habit of observing their children’s sleep in order to detect and treat them early.
