How to test for HIV

Testing for HIV can be done by testing for antibodies. Antibody testing can be done by taking blood specimens, urine or saliva specimens, but blood specimens are most commonly used. The advantage of saliva or urine specimens is that they can be easier to use, and if test strips are used, they can be more convenient for testing, but they are generally more expensive. If you don’t care too much about this, you can go to the hospital and have your blood tested for HIV antibodies to find out if you have AIDS. Of course, there is a window period for antibody testing, if you have recently been infected with AIDS within 3 months, a negative HIV test does not guarantee 100% that you are not infected; however, if you have not been infected with AIDS in the last 3 months, a negative result can absolutely rule out the possibility of having AIDS.
