Metformin does not necessarily need to be taken for life to lower blood sugar.
Metformin is a class of oral hypoglycemic drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in which diet and physical activity alone do not control blood sugar well. People who need to take metformin are usually diabetic.
Since diabetes cannot be cured, long-term use of hypoglycemic drugs is needed to maintain blood glucose within a reasonable range, and unauthorized stopping of the medication may cause the blood glucose to rise again, so metformin may need to be taken for life.
However, if a patient cannot tolerate metformin, he or she can switch to another hypoglycemic drug, and in such cases, it is not necessary to take metformin for the rest of his or her life.
Patients with diabetes who need to take metformin are advised to take it under the supervision of a doctor.
