A cochlear implant, also known as a cochlear implant, is an electronic device that mimics the workings of the cochlear hair cells. A cochlear implant is the only effective treatment for neurological deafness. All cochlear implant devices have several components, including an internal part that is surgically implanted and a speech processor and head piece that is worn outside the body. These components are combined to provide hearing assistance to the implant recipient. 1. The in vivo portion of the implant The in vivo portion consists of a receiver processor and a sequence of electrodes. The receiver is the largest component of the in vivo part and is surgically placed in the mastoid process. It consists of a magnet (to hold the external head piece in place) and an antenna. Some receiver processors are encapsulated in silicone cartridges, while others are encapsulated in ceramic cartridges. Both the intracochlear and extracochlear electrodes are connected to the receiver. The extra-cochlear electrodes are located outside the cochlea, either on the receiver coil or under the temporalis muscle. The cochlear implant has several common external components that combine to collect, analyze, and process sound and to transmit information to the internal components. The external components include the microphone, connecting wires, speech processor, and transmitter coil. The speech processor analyzes the picked up electrical signals and decides how to stimulate the electrodes embedded in the cochlea. The instructions of the speech processor are transmitted to the in vivo sensors, which generate electric currents from the electrodes to the peripheral endings of the auditory nerve or the cell cytosol. The latter generates nerve action potentials through the central end of the auditory nerve to the auditory center of the brain, and further produces hearing. At present, cochlear implants are mainly imported, and there are different models, with prices generally ranging from 150,000 to 260,000, at different price levels and grades.
