What to pay attention to after gastric cancer surgery

In clinical work, patients often ask what they should pay attention to after gastric cancer surgery, when they should come for review, and what things they should not eat. Because of the busy work schedule, I can’t answer them one by one. Now I will list some questions that patients often ask and answer them, hoping to help them. 1.What are the symptoms that need attention after gastric cancer surgery? Under normal circumstances, symptoms such as nausea, belching, upper abdominal pain or discomfort, heartburn or indigestion, diarrhea, constipation and weight loss will appear after gastric cancer surgery. Most of the above symptoms are functional disorders of the digestive tract, which are generally mild and can be relieved by themselves. Therefore, when the above symptoms are progressively aggravated or cannot be relieved by drug treatment, patients are suggested to go to follow-up clinic for review. 2.What foods should not be eaten after gastrectomy for gastric cancer? The famous doctor Zhang Zihe has this statement in his “Confucian Family Affair”: “The sin of avoiding food too much.” It means that the patient wants to eat but does not give in, but makes the disease delayed. In Western medicine, there is no such thing as taboo, but the purpose is to make the patient increase his diet and regain his weight. Another is to pay attention to the patient’s mood, not to make the patient unhappy, unhappiness can make the patient long to increase the disease. Therefore, we encourage patients to eat what is comfortable and not to eat what is uncomfortable. 3.When should I go to hospital for review after gastrectomy and what items should be examined? Patients should go to the hospital follow-up clinic (recommended to the hospital where the gastrectomy was first performed) for review 3~6 months after surgery, and then make further follow-up plans according to patients’ specific conditions. The examination items include: blood, radiology and gastroscopy. 4.Recommendations for follow-up Follow-up Checkups should be conducted at the follow-up clinic every 6 months for 1-2 years after surgery, every 6-12 months for 3-5 years afterwards, and every year thereafter. Blood, radiology and gastroscopy will be performed depending on the clinical situation. If any problems are found during the follow-up clinic, you can go to the attending surgeon at that time for the next treatment plan (you can bring all the examination materials). This reduces the burden on the specialist clinic and saves time for the patient.
