What are the dangers of bronchoscopy in newborns?

The possible hazards of bronchoscopy in neonates are anesthesia risk, respiratory distress, hypoxemia, accidental injury, etc.
1. Anesthesia risk: newborns are usually anesthetized during bronchoscopy in order to improve the effect of cooperation. Meanwhile, newborns have weaker resistance, so anesthesia risk occurs higher, such as blood pressure abnormality, nerve injury, and so on.
2. Dyspnea: some newborns do not cooperate well with the doctor during bronchoscopy, therefore, there is more stimulation to the surrounding normal tissues, which may lead to the occurrence of laryngeal edema and then dyspnea.
3. Hypoxemia: the main reason for the emergence of hypoxemia is that during bronchoscopy, the neonate’s respiration is affected, which may be caused by anesthesia, or may be due to bronchoscopic stimulation induced bronchospasm, which leads to oxygen inhalation restriction and hypoxemia.
4. Accidental injury: in the process of bronchoscopy, if the newborn and the doctor do not cooperate well, or the doctor’s operation is too violent, it may lead to nasal mucosal injury, or even pneumothorax and other problems. If violent vomiting is induced during the examination, it may cause serious consequences such as aspiration and suffocation.
Therefore, it is recommended that newborns need to improve the relevant examinations before bronchoscopy on the one hand, and follow the doctor’s instructions to make good preparations before the examination on the other hand, in order to avoid the emergence of anesthesia risks, respiratory difficulties, hypoxemia, accidental injuries and other dangers.
