Can a mild cough heal itself in infants?

A mild cough usually resolves itself and does not require further medication or medical attention. If the cough worsens or interferes with eating or rest, further treatment is needed. Coughing is a normal protective reflex of infants to expel foreign bodies or secretions from the respiratory tract by coughing. Therefore, when an infant has a mild cough, it can usually heal itself gradually with proper water intake, moisturizing the indoor environment and eliminating irritating odors. If an infant’s cough worsens and even interferes with eating and resting, consider symptomatic treatment under the guidance of a pediatrician, such as coughing up phlegm and using cough suppressants. Note that parents should not use cough medicine on their own when an infant develops a cough based on experience, as this may hide the condition or cause adverse reactions.
