Most newborns with heart murmurs are born with congenital heart disease. If the mother of the newborn has a viral infection within the first 3 months of pregnancy or is exposed to more radioactive substances, this can greatly increase the probability of the newborn having congenital heart disease. This is because this is a critical stage of organ development in newborns, which can cause heart development disorders that can lead to congenital heart disease such as ventricular septal defects, atrial septal defects, and even tetralogy of Fallot. In newborns with congenital heart disease, there are abnormalities in blood flow dynamics, which can lead to pathological murmurs. If a newborn has a murmur, a heart ultrasound can be done promptly to determine if further treatment is needed based on the results of the heart ultrasound.
