When is the best time to have myopia correction surgery?

Every year from March to June, my pre-laser patients gradually increase in number for patients who come to me for laser correction surgery through professional vision examination. They are full of vigor and enthusiasm, with dreams of becoming soldiers, police officers, pilots and airline pilots. They are usually young people who have just turned 18 years old, or newborn calves who have just graduated from college. I always try my best to design the most suitable surgical plan for them, talk with them to ease their nervousness and apprehension, and hope to open up clear and bright vision for them, so that they can fly without restraint in the future. I have accumulated a lot of experience and feelings for these young people, and today I would like to share my thoughts with more myopic patients who have similar experiences. 1. Is it necessary to have surgery if you have bad vision? Some young people don’t usually wear glasses, but they are determined to undergo surgery in order to pass the 4.7 or 5.0 requirement for the medical exam. In fact, my advice is to come to a regular hospital first for an accurate medical optometry to know whether you have myopia or astigmatism. Some people have over-adjustment due to excessive close eye use. It is possible to improve vision by relaxing the eyes, adjusting eye habits, or using artificial tears to improve the tear film pattern. However, if the optometry results suggest that there is indeed myopia or astigmatism, the naked eye can not meet the requirements of the physical examination, that can only be corrected. 2.When is it better to come for surgery correction? Nowadays, the recovery of vision after full femtosecond laser surgery is very fast, usually the first day after surgery can reach 0.8 to 1.0 vision, if you go to the medical examination 3 days to 1 week after surgery, there is usually no problem. However, in some cases, more time needs to be allowed for postoperative vision to recover to the requirements of the physical examination. For example: (1) poor corneal morphology, too thin, only excimer surface optimization can be done, that vision recovery time will take 10 to 20 weeks; (2) eyes are too dry, corneal epithelium is not good, need to adjust with medication for a week; (3) contact lens stop wearing for more than a week for preoperative examination, or review before surgery; (4) fundus retina found fissure, need to perform fundus laser to close the fissure first, then laser correction of myopia. All of these cases can be dealt with, but it is only necessary to set aside some time to deal with them. Therefore, it is recommended to come for pre-operative examination at least one month before the medical examination to clarify whether you are suitable for the surgery. Some people want to wait for the written exam results to come out before making a final decision on whether or not to have surgery, and that can also be done in mind. However, to ensure that you pass the physical exam, it is still recommended to come for surgery at least one week before the physical exam to allow time for your vision to recover. 3. Is it possible to operate at too young an age and with an unstable prescription? In principle, it is recommended to consider laser myopia correction surgery if you are at least 18 years old and your myopia has been stable for the last 2 years, with a deepening of no more than 100 degrees. This is all for the sake of post-operative vision stability, because laser myopia surgery can only correct the existing myopia and has no role in stopping and preventing myopia progression. After 18 years of age, the rate of myopia deepening stabilizes, but at the same time, care should be taken not to overuse the eyes. Therefore, for young people with unstable myopia, I suggest that they should have regular eye examinations to record their myopia and then undergo laser surgery after it has stabilized. If they have to take a medical examination for reasons of further education, work and future, I hope that they will fully understand before the surgery and pay attention to the control of their eye habits after the surgery to prevent the continuous development of myopia. The development of laser myopia correction surgery has been very mature, and there are various surgical methods. After a thorough examination, most myopic patients can design the most suitable plan, but it must be through the patient’s rational mind, the doctor’s meticulous examination and design, meticulous surgery, and good post-operative follow-up medication to obtain the safest and best quality results. This is my consistent wish.
