How to grade bronchiectasis

FACED scale: pulmonary function, age, radiographic range, microbiological profile and symptoms. (1) Pulmonary function assessment: 0 score for FEV1 <50%, 1 score for FEV1 >50%, FEV1 ratio (OR) 5.2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.8 – 9.8). (2) Age assessment: 0 for patients ≤70 years and 2 for patients >70 years (OR, 4.9; 95% CI, 2.7-9.3). (3) Radiographic range assessment (OR, 1.9; 95% CI, 1.1 – 3.5): 1 point for 1 lobe and 2 points for ≥2 lobes. (4) Assessment of microbiological data: 0 points for the absence of P. aeruginosa (OR, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.3 – 4.6) and 1 point for the presence. (5) Symptom assessment (OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.5 – 5.2): 0 points for absence of dyspnea and 1 point for presence. ”Patients with a score of 0, 1, or 2 had mild bronchiectasis because the probability of death in the next 5 years from the diagnosis of bronchiectasis was less than 5%” . ”Patients with a score of 3, 4, or 5 had moderate bronchiectasis. Patients with a score of 6 or 7 had severe bronchiectasis, as these patients had a probability of death of almost 70% in 5 years.
