What is the meaning of kF ring

The kF ring is a typical ocular manifestation in patients with hepatomegaly, which often appears before the age of 40 years and is mostly autosomal recessive. Slit-lamp examination reveals a 1-3 mm brown, red or green band in the posterior elastic layer of the peripheral cornea. The band can be either full or half-ringed, with the initial band mostly seen in the upper part of the cornea. kF rings are caused by copper deposits in the blood in the posterior elastic layer of the cornea in patients with hepatomegaly, for which there is no specific treatment in ophthalmology. kF rings are a specific indicator for the diagnosis of hepatomegaly by internists and a criterion for the treatment of hepatomegaly. The absorption of the copper deposited in the elastic layer and the disappearance of the kF ring is the gold standard for the effectiveness of the treatment.
