Surgical treatment for eyelid skin laxity involves removing excess skin from the eyelids, commonly known as a “facelift”, which is a cosmetic procedure in the eyes of many people in China that tenses the skin under the eyes and makes people look younger. Many elderly people have the problem of lax eyelids, when the physician suggests surgery, because they do not care too much about their appearance, or even afraid of being called “old and pretty”, although lax eyelids have caused other problems, such as eye opening difficulties, visual fatigue, etc., they do not accept the surgery. However, lax eyelids can cause more serious problems, such as impingement, eye stinging pain, corneal epithelial damage, visual field blockage, and even serious consequences such as falls and fractures due to visual field blockage. We had an elderly professor at our school whose doctor found significant upper lid skin laxity when she came to the hospital for a physical exam and recommended surgery. As soon as she was discharged from orthopedics 2 years later, she asked to be transferred to ophthalmology for treatment of her lid skin laxity. What happened? It turned out that because the lid laxity was becoming more and more pronounced, she had developed the habit of looking up to see the road ahead without raising her head. When she was going down the stairs, she slipped and fell because she couldn’t see the water beneath her feet, and she suffered a fracture of the neck of her femur, which led to a major orthopedic surgery, a cast, and the inability to walk. Afterwards the old lady figured out that, in fact, a small operation on the eyelids could have prevented this big risk. So, loose eyelids in the elderly is not a small thing, and not dealing with it in time can lead to big hazards. Timely eyelid laxity correction surgery is not only for aesthetic reasons, but mainly to prevent more serious hazards such as falls and fractures.
