How long does a course of radiation therapy take?

The time required for a course of radiotherapy is mainly related to the tumor site and the purpose of treatment, which cannot be generalized. In general, radiotherapy can be divided into radical radiotherapy, palliative radiotherapy, preoperative radiotherapy and postoperative radiotherapy according to the purpose of treatment. The duration of preoperative radiotherapy is usually 4 weeks, while the duration of palliative and postoperative radiotherapy is about 5 weeks. If the patient’s disease is found early, then local radical radiotherapy is usually used, and the course of treatment is about 6 weeks. For example, radical radiotherapy for cervical esophageal cancer takes more than 6 weeks, while radiotherapy for thoracic esophageal cancer takes 5 weeks. In addition, treatment for special sites needs to be treated according to the condition. At present, X-blade is advocated, which mainly adopts single high-dose irradiation to maximize the irradiation dose to the tumor and shorten the overall treatment time. Patients are recommended to visit the medical oncology department of regular hospitals, and professional doctors will formulate a reasonable chemotherapy plan according to individual patients’ conditions.
