About how to maintain the teeth of infants and children

Patient: Description of condition (onset, main symptoms, hospital visited, etc.): Can a 2-year-old baby brush his teeth now? Thank you, Dr. Wang, for your guidance. Wang Minyong, Department of Pediatric Stomatology, Peking University Stomatology Hospital, Beijing, China: Children should start brushing their teeth from the first tooth, and before that they should often wipe their gums with gauze, both for cleaning and for the child to get used to such action so that they can brush their teeth smoothly in the future. You can choose some rubber-like finger toothbrushes when you are around one year old; after two years old, you can choose a small-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush for your child; you can brush your child’s teeth without toothpaste until three years old, and after that (when you can spit out the toothpaste completely on demand) you can use a small amount of children’s toothpaste (the size of a soybean). The key to brushing is to brush all the teeth on all sides; also be careful to eat less sweets, especially not to drink milk and other desserts before and during bedtime.
