Babies will let parents know they are ready for complementary foods around 4 months of age. If the baby is still not finished with the milk and their head is already erect, this is a developmental and physiological signal that they need complementary foods. Whether breastfed or otherwise, complementary foods, such as homemade purees, baby rice flour and baby bottles, should be added at 4 months of age. Complementary foods are not the same as snacks that can be eaten or not eaten, and should not be confused with adult foods. Cereals fortified with a variety of nutrients are the ideal first solid food supplement for infants.
