Meropenem is a new generation of broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotics. It easily penetrates the cell walls of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria to reach its target of action. It is able to target almost all bacterial infections except for a subset of methicillin-resistant staphylococci. Meropenem is mainly used clinically to treat severe pneumonia, broad-spectrum resistant urinary tract infections, gynecological infections, and intracranial infections. It is recommended at 0.5 g three times daily.
