How long does it take for costochondritis to heal on its own

Costochondritis can recover on its own in about 1-2 weeks if no treatment is taken, and in about 3-4 days if the appropriate treatment is taken. Costochondritis is caused by muscle strain due to strenuous exercise and overexertion, which may trigger an attack of costochondritis in cases of low resistance such as cold or infection. Most patients have relatively mild symptoms, with pressure pain on the outside of the chest as well as radiating pain, and usually no swelling. Patients can usually get relief in 3-4 days with physical therapy or physiotherapy and medication. If the patient relies on rest alone without any form of treatment, recovery can take 1-2 weeks, but of course it needs to be judged in the context of the patient’s age and whether there is a combination of underlying diseases. Therefore, if patients develop costochondritis and discomfort exists, they need to actively intervene, if necessary by visiting a hospital rheumatology or orthopedics department for timely relief of symptoms.
