How is the open angle glaucoma CLASS procedure done?

On May 26, 2015, Director Chaohui Li led his team to successfully complete the first CLASS surgery for open-angle glaucoma in China. The principle of CLASS surgery, namely laser-assisted ablation of the outer layer of Schlemm’s canal, is to use the CO2 laser’s ability to be absorbed by water to precisely dissect and ablate the deep sclera and the outer layer of Schlemm’s canal without penetrating the eye, creating a new atrial water outflow pathway and effectively reducing IOP. Compared with traditional trabeculectomy, CLASS surgery can complete hemostasis while laser ablation, effectively shortening the operation time and reducing the incidence of postoperative shallow anterior chamber and scarring. In the next step, our department will continue to carry out CLASS surgery and observe the long-term postoperative results to bring a new breakthrough in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma.
