If the root of the tongue has cracks, if it is pathologic, it can be identified as Heat Sheng injuring Yin, Blood deficiency without moistening, and Spleen deficiency with wet invasion.
1. Heat is injurious to yin, manifested as red tongue with cracks. Because of the evil heat within the full bloom, the yin fluid is greatly injured, or yin deficiency fluid loss, so that the tongue surface is not moistened, tongue atrophy caused.
2. Blood deficiency without moistening, manifested as pale white tongue with cracks. Because of blood deficiency, the tongue cannot be nourished and moisturized, and the tongue is not nourished.
3. Spleen deficiency and dampness invasion, manifested as a pale white tongue with teeth marks and cracks on the side. Mostly due to the loss of spleen health and transportation (dysfunction of the spleen’s transport function), dampness invades the tongue, the tongue is fat and tender with teeth marks; the essence can not be transmitted to moisten and nourish the tongue, then the tongue is pale and cracks are seen.
The above is a pathological state, and cracks at the base of the tongue can also be seen in normal people, who are born with cracks and have no discomfort.
