Cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics are used for traumatic infections. The wound needs to be disinfected with iodophor or alcohol at the time of injury, with iodophor being used more often because the strong irritation of alcohol may cause pain and other discomfort to the patient. If there is a foreign body or contaminant present in the wound, debridement is performed to drain the foreign body and contaminant. When a traumatic wound is infected and there is no purulent discharge, it can be treated with oral antibiotics and topical anti-infective creams. If suppuration has occurred, surgical incision and drainage is required.
