Fetal movement refers to a movement of the fetus in the uterus such as kicking, reaching and other activities impacting the uterine wall. The number of fetal movements is not set in stone, as long as they are regular and rhythmic they are considered normal. Usually, when a pregnant woman is around 16-20 weeks pregnant, she can clearly feel the activity of the fetus in her abdomen. Fetal movement in a pregnant woman’s abdomen is an important indicator of whether the fetus is developing healthily in the mother’s body. Fetal movement is about 3-5 times per hour, and the number of fetal movements in 12 hours is about 30-40 times. In some cases, the number of movements is as high as 100 in 12 hours. As long as the number of movements is regular and rhythmic, and there are no other changes, it is normal. There is no rule on how many movements must be normal. However, if the fetal movement is less than 3 times per hour, we should be alert to the possibility of fetal hypoxia, and should closely observe the number of fetal movements. Changes in fetal movement can be caused by the posture of the pregnant woman, her emotions, as well as by bright lights, strong sounds and touching the abdomen. Detecting fetal movement on your own is the easiest and most direct way for a pregnant woman to know if her fetus is developing healthily. Therefore, after the first fetal movement during pregnancy, you should pay close attention to your fetus’s fetal movement, and if there is any abnormality, you should also find it in time and seek medical attention.
