Minimally invasive treatment of funnel chest (NUSS surgery)

Thoracoscopic sternal lift for funnel chest (NUSS surgery) Traditional surgery is very traumatic and recovery from surgery is slow. In the past, the skin was cut longitudinally in the anterior chest of the child, the incision was about 10 cm, the two sides of the pectoral muscles were separated, part of the ribs on both sides were removed, and then fixed with steel pins. The operation is very traumatic, bleeds a lot (300-400 ml), takes a long time (about 2.5-3 hours) and has a slow recovery. In addition, because the steel needle is easy to move, it is often displaced and bent, and there is a possibility of breakage, and permanent scars are left after surgery. At present, this procedure is less used internationally, but some hospitals in China are still using this procedure. At present, the most advanced “minimally invasive funnel chest orthopedic surgery” (NUSS surgery) is performed under the thoracoscope to lift the sternum, which only requires a 1 cm incision on the lateral chest wall of the child to place the thoracoscope, and a 2 cm incision on both sides of the lateral chest wall to fix the plate behind the sternum. The operation is less traumatic (no rib cutting), less bleeding (5-10 ml), the operation time is only 30-40 minutes, the postoperative recovery is fast, the plate is fixed firmly, there is no incision in the anterior chest, the appearance is beautiful, and it is the internationally accepted operation method. The age of surgery is 4-20 years old, and the best age for surgery is 6-12 years old.
