Plaque and calculus are in different stages. Before calcification occurs, the build-up of tooth debris and bacteria is called plaque, and after calcification, it becomes calculus. Before calcification, this plaque can be removed by brushing and flossing. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing or flossing and needs to be cleaned in hospital.
