What is the cause of chest pain with difficulty swallowing?

Chest pain with dysphagia usually indicates a disease of the oesophagus, such as reflux oesophagitis.
Our food passes through the mouth into the oesophagus and under normal circumstances gradually enters the gastrointestinal tract. If the oesophagus and stomach become diseased, there may be reflux of food and stomach acid from the stomach into the oesophagus, causing reflux oesophagitis. If the refluxed food or stomach acid irritates the oesophagus, pain behind the sternum may occur and the function of the oesophagus may be affected resulting in a sensation of swallowing a foreign body or even difficulty in swallowing.
When this occurs, it is advisable to visit a gastroenterologist first.
