Is an abdominal shunt for life?

Most patients have an abdominal shunt for life. An abdominal shunt is usually used as a drainage method for patients with hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury, and other disorders. It helps to decompress the cranium by diverting cerebrospinal fluid from the skull into the abdominal cavity and improves dizziness, headaches, and intracranial hypertension in patients. A small number of patients with hydrocephalus can have their intracranial pressure normalized after treatment and can have their abdominal shunts removed, but the majority of patients have abdominal shunts that need to be in place for the rest of their lives. If obstruction of the shunt occurs during the placement of the abdominal shunt, it needs to be replaced in time, and the shunt needs to be sterilized locally after surgery to avoid infection. If there is pain and discomfort at the location of shunt deformity, physical therapy such as hot compresses, microwave, and infrared light can be given to relieve the pain. Whether or not an abdominal shunt needs to be placed for life needs to be judged according to the actual situation of the disease, and it is recommended that patients consult a doctor for a clear diagnosis.
