In Chinese medicine, dry mouth can be divided into two main cases. The first is absolute water deficiency, which is commonly known as water shortage, and the second is when there is water in the body, but it cannot be converted into usable water, which is called phlegm drink without transformation. In the first case, the absolute lack of water, you can often use medicines to nourish Yin, such as Mai Dong, Xuan Shen, Tian Dong, Sha Shen, etc. If you also have dry stools, you can use Chinese herbal formulas such as Zeng Li Cheng Qi Tang to clear the evil heat, reduce the torment of fluid, and at the same time replenish fluid to relieve dry mouth and tongue. In the second case, there is water in the body but the transformation is obstructed. In this case, it belongs to the phlegm-drinking disease in traditional Chinese medicine, so we can consider using formulas such as Wu Ling San or Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang to treat it and promote the transformation of water in the body into absorbable water. Of course, in addition to these two conditions, there are some special clinical symptoms, such as blood stasis. When there is blood stasis, because of the homologous origin of fluid and blood, it can also block the transformation of water. Blood stasis can be cleared with a formula like Tao Hong Si Wu Tang or Blood Mansions and Blood Stasis Tang, and after the blood stasis is cleared, the dry mouth and tongue can also be relieved.
