Low menstrual flow after abortion

Decreasing menstruation after an abortion may be caused by damage to the deep endometrium (meaning the basal layer of the endometrium) during the abortion procedure, resulting in the endometrium having a deficiency, which can cause uterine adhesions. In addition, if the epithelium of the cervical canal is damaged during the operation, it can also cause cervical canal adhesions and reduced menstrual flow. If this is the case, a prompt hospital visit should be made. After completing a basic gynecologic ultrasound examination, depending on the doctor’s opinion, a hysteroscopy can be performed to clarify or rule out the possibility of cervical adhesions. If hysteroscopic examination reveals uterine adhesions, hysteroscopic separation of the adhesions can be performed at this time. After the separation, since there is still a possibility of recurrence of the adhesions, estrogen or intrauterine device can be applied to reduce the possibility of recurrence of the adhesions afterwards, in consultation with the doctor.
