Notes on dental visits for children

In developed countries in Europe and the United States, children are exposed to the dentist from a very young age: not always with ailments, many times purely health care, maintenance. But a popular Chinese saying: eight years old, eight, change the dog teeth. Many parents think: it’s not too late to talk about it when it’s time to change anyway. This delay, may really be too late. Due to the failure to develop scientific dental habits from childhood, coupled with a variety of unhygienic and unwise choices when eating to satisfy the appetite of the mouth, children often cover the small cheeks, bitter little face: Mom, toothache! The child side of the toothache, the adult side of the headache, especially the dentist – dentists welcome children to dental care, but if it is too late to fill or even extract teeth, it is a bit of a headache. To turn a crying child into a cooperative patient who is not afraid to visit the dentist is the highest art of dental behavior, requiring not only the dentist’s patience and skill, but also the parents who accompany him or her to play their important role: their words and actions will directly aggravate or alleviate the child’s pain and the dentist’s difficulties. The following instructions for children’s dental treatment are our advice to parents, and we believe they may also be of some help to you: Before treatment It can create a preconceived sense of fear in the child. Even if the parents themselves have suffered a lot and talk about teeth, please do not be nervous when you take your child to the dentist, and pretend to be relaxed. 2. Don’t lie to your child and say, “I’m just going to have a look at the dentist,” because the dentist will certainly not just have a look, and the lie will soon be exposed. If your child insists on asking what you are doing at the hospital, you can answer “I will know after the dentist has finished looking at you”. 3, do not use bribery to trick the child to go to the hospital, should gradually make him understand the importance of dental care, realize that regular oral examination and oral health care is their own responsibility. Similar to “If you will see the dentist, I will buy toys or gum for you.” “Let the dentist fix the cavities inside your teeth so you can eat what you love.” Promises such as these are not ideal. When treating: 1. Don’t have the illusion of completing multiple treatments in one treatment time, children’s patience is limited, one treatment time should not exceed 20-30 minutes. 2, do not mention “pull, injection, injection, pain” and other words that make children afraid, can be “take, on” and other words instead. For example, “get rid of the toothworm today, today or not on the anesthetic”, etc. 3, cooperate with the dentist, keep quiet, smile. It is okay to praise children, but threats or scoldings should never be used. The purpose is to make the child and the dentist to establish a stable, good one-way communication relationship. 4.After two or three treatments, if the child is used to the treatment environment, parents should withdraw from the treatment room as much as possible, so that the child’s independence can be developed, and at the same time he will be very happy that he has grown up and is respected. 5.When anesthesia is needed during the treatment, please look natural and relaxed, do not hold your child’s hand and say “It’s okay, it’s just a little pain, bear with it.” If you say so, it will make the original relaxed state become nervous. 6, the dentist will sometimes use a soft but powerful tone of voice to order the child, which is mostly the child some misbehavior, in order to avoid harm to the child, must be handled in a more decisive way. Parents should not be surprised, and do not make a sound, this is only a way to control the behavior of children, and not the dentist in a tantrum. After the treatment: 1. If the child cries during the treatment, do not blame, but say “Although you cried, you were very brave to complete the treatment.” If you don’t cry, you can say, “You’re great today, you didn’t cry at all.” But do not buy something to bribe. 2, if the treatment process on the anesthetic, back to 2-3 hours to pay attention to the child, do not let him bite his lips. Because the lips have not yet regained consciousness, the child will keep biting because of curiosity, and do not know the pain when bitten.
