What is the window period of AIDS?

The window period of HIV is the period between the time a healthy person is infected with HIV and the time when HIV infection can be detected. During the window period, the patient is already infected with AIDS, but the infection cannot be detected through testing, so patients should avoid testing during the window period and should be tested after the window period has passed to determine if they are infected with AIDS. Generally in our country, HIV antibodies can be detected in the infected person in about 3-4 weeks with antibody testing, and in about 2-3 weeks with combined antigen-antibody testing. In the case of HIV-RNA testing, the virus can be detected in the infected person’s body in about 7-10 days and should be treated with antiviral drugs as soon as possible after the diagnosis is confirmed.
