How long does a medical abortion take?

In general, it usually takes 3-5 days to perform a medication abortion. If the menopause is within 49 days, the age is less than 40 years old, the ultrasound indicates intrauterine pregnancy, and there are no contraindications to medication abortion, medication abortion is an option. Mifepristone and misoprostol are the two drugs generally used for medication abortion, which may be taken orally for 2 or 3 days depending on the doctor’s dosing habits. After taking mifepristone, misoprostol is taken. Within 6 hours of taking misoprostol orally, abdominal pain will appear and then the gestational sac will be excluded. If the gestational sac tissue is still not seen to be expelled after 6 hours, prompt ultrasound examination is recommended to determine if the medical abortion has failed. Some women need to be treated with uterine evacuation to avoid residues from accumulating in the uterine cavity for a long time and forming inflammation, which also takes some time. If the gestational sac is discharged successfully and the vaginal bleeding is low, the patient’s body usually recovers gradually after a month or so. In addition, after a medical abortion, women should go to the hospital for ultrasound review to confirm whether there is any remaining embryo in the uterus and whether the pregnancy is terminated.
