What is alcoholic gastritis?

Alcoholic gastritis is a gastric mucosal injury caused by ethanol. Usually ethanol can be rapidly absorbed by the gastric mucosa and lead to gastric mucosal congestion, edema, erosion and bleeding through different mechanisms. Symptoms of alcoholic gastritis include severe heartburn, acid reflux, nausea and vomiting after excessive alcohol consumption, and in severe cases, vomiting of blood and black stools. Major complications are upper gastrointestinal bleeding, dehydration, electrolyte disorders and acid-base imbalance. Generally for the diagnosis of alcoholic gastritis, gastroscopy shows gastric mucosal congestion, edema, erosion and bleeding. The diagnosis can be confirmed based on the patient’s medical history, clinical manifestations, and gastroscopy. When patients develop alcoholic gastritis, it is recommended to seek timely medical treatment and regular treatment under the guidance of doctors.
