People who are found to have hypertension for the first time need oral antihypertensive medication if their blood pressure exceeds 160/100mmHg. 160/100mmHg means that oral antihypertensive medication is needed whenever the systolic or diastolic blood pressure target of which is exceeded. Generally, oral antihypertensive medication is required for grade 2 or higher hypertension, but if the patient has comorbidities such as diabetes, abnormal kidney function or severe coronary heart disease or heart failure, oral antihypertensive medication is required as long as the blood pressure exceeds 140/90 mmHg to control the blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg. However, if there is no comorbidity, grade 2 hypertension below 160/100mmHg can be improved by controlling poor lifestyle first, and oral medication is also needed if the blood pressure cannot be lowered to normal after lifestyle control.
