Grade 2 placenta refers to placenta nearing maturity. Grade 3 placenta often indicates placental senescence, due to calcification and fibrin deposition, which reduces the placenta’s ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients. A prolonged period of grade 3 placenta will affect fetal nutrition and blood supply, which may lead to intrauterine hypoxia and distress. However, the date of delivery cannot be determined solely on the basis of placental aging. The cervix matures and softens before delivery, and the uterus appears to will regular contractions. With placental function grade 3, it is recommended to count fetal movements daily, avoid excessive intake of calcium-containing foods, and pregnant women can move more to bring the fetal head into the pelvis and induce contractions.
