What is cough variant asthma?

Cough variant asthma (CVA) is a special type of bronchial asthma characterized by chronic, intractable cough, especially nocturnal episodes of dry cough, with a duration of more than 8 weeks or even up to several years, which seriously affects the patient’s quality of life, and its incidence has been on the rise in recent years; CVA is also one of the main causes of chronic cough, and due to insufficient knowledge of the disease, there are a large number of misdiagnosed, underdiagnosed and mistreated cases. About 30-47% of patients with CVA can develop into typical bronchial asthma within 1-5 years. The characteristics of CVA: 1. Clinical symptoms: paroxysmal cough lasting more than 8 weeks without wheezing and dyspnea. 2. 2. Both lungs may be auscultated without croup. 3, Pulmonary function tests: mostly normal, but positive bronchial excitation test. 4.Application of antibiotics and conventional cough medicines are ineffective. 5. The cough mostly attacks at night and can be triggered by inhalation of cold air (oil fumes, irritating volatile substances, etc.) or exercise. 6. The patient has a previous history of allergic diseases or family history or upper respiratory tract infection factors. 7. Laboratory tests often show an increase in blood eosinophils. For the treatment of CVA: The current Western medical treatment is the same as that of typical asthma, such as inhaled β2 agonists, inhaled or oral hormones, leukotriene receptor antagonists, etc. In recent years, Chinese medicine has achieved good clinical efficacy and less side effects in the treatment of CVA. Our department undertakes the third batch of advantageous disease projects of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Capital Medical Development Fund project to carry out TCM research on cough variant asthma, and has achieved good results with the application of the methods of draining wind and relieving spasm to stop coughing, relieving depression and promoting lung circulation, and reducing dampness to stop coughing, and has reduced the side effects of applying hormones.
