Can liver puncture detect liver cancer?

  A. What is liver puncture? Liver puncture is a biopsy of the liver tissue, which is the only means of obtaining specimens of the lesion other than surgical resection, and patients who must have liver puncture are those whose liver disease has developed to a certain stage, with serious liver destruction, a large number of hepatocytes have degenerated and necrosed, and fibrous tissue has proliferated. Generally speaking, the liver has reached the stage of cirrhosis. Liver aspiration biopsy has an accuracy rate of more than 80% and is currently a better means of examination. First of all, the location of the puncture point should be confirmed by ultrasound, and for patients with obvious enlargement of the liver, the puncture can be done under the rib cage. Before the liver puncture biopsy procedure, the patient is usually disinfected and anesthetized. During the liver puncture biopsy, the patient should keep breathing calmly while the doctor penetrates the skin through the puncture point with the puncture needle and quickly removes the needle after entering the liver parenchyma, the whole process only takes 1-2 seconds. Can liver puncture detect liver cancer? For patients with clear history of liver cancer or cirrhosis and imaging examination showing characteristic changes of liver cancer, diagnosis can be made without liver puncture, but for patients with negative alpha-fetoprotein, liver puncture examination can be considered. However, in clinical practice, fine needle aspiration is mostly used, and only a small amount of liver tissue can be obtained, and because of the different degrees of differentiation in tumor tissues, liver aspiration biopsy may have certain false negatives. Therefore, even if the biopsy result of liver aspiration is negative, it should be combined with other examinations to make a careful judgment.
