There are many causes of abdominal distention, but intestinal disorders are the most common, such as acute enteritis.
For men, diseases such as prostatitis and prostate enlargement can also manifest as small abdominal distention.
For women, abdominal distension can be experienced during menstruation and ovulation (about 2 weeks before the onset of menstruation) and is physiological. Abdominal pain can also occur in cases of pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids.
It is important to distinguish between different manifestations in different individuals. Those with persistent abdominal distension that cannot be relieved, or those with significant abdominal pain, should seek prompt medical attention.
