Why is a hip fracture in the elderly called “the last fracture of life”?

The number of elderly fracture patients in hospitals has increased in recent years, with senior citizens being admitted to hospitals with fractures every day. For hip fracture patients, we usually say that this is the “last fracture of life” when explaining the condition to the patient’s family. This means that if this fracture occurs, the elderly person’s life is in danger! Many elderly people die from complications caused by this fracture and never have another chance to fracture again. Hip fractures generally include fractures of the femoral neck, intertrochanteric fractures and subtrochanteric fractures. According to statistics, the death rate of elderly people with hip fracture is as high as 50% in one year, which means that half of the patients will die due to various reasons after the fracture, which is really the “last fracture of life”. After a hip fracture, it is very difficult for the patient to turn and sit up. Four major complications – respiratory infection, urinary tract infection, deep vein thrombosis and bed sores – will soon appear, and any one of them will endanger the patient’s life. Surgery has certain risks, but compared with conservative treatment, early activity after surgery can minimize the complications caused by long-term bed rest and reduce mortality. Therefore, in recent years, in the choice of treatment, if the patient’s physical condition allows, the first choice is surgery, and to operate as soon as possible. Surgery is like breaking a barrier, requiring the cooperation of orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensive care units, internal medicine and other departments, as well as the patient and family. The decision to operate or to treat conservatively rests with the patient and family. Only when the family is determined to operate can the doctor carry the weight and the patient and doctor work together to get the patient through the difficult time. With advances in surgical techniques and improved materials, more and more elderly people are surviving, and many hip fractures are no longer the last fracture of their lives.
