A newborn’s first food should never be glucose water, plain water or formula, but breast milk. According to UNICEF’s “New Perspective on Breastfeeding”, do not feed sugar water or milk before breastfeeding. This is because nowadays, “early breastfeeding and regular breastfeeding” are promoted. Breastfeeding can be started half an hour after the newborn arrives on earth, and no later than 6 hours. The benefits of breastfeeding a newborn immediately after birth (1) The World Health Organization (WTO) specifies in the breastfeeding regulations that a newborn should be placed on the mother’s breast immediately after birth for skin-to-skin contact and to help the newborn suckle the nipple for no less than 30 minutes, unless the mother has a serious illness. Our law on the protection of the rights of mothers and infants also has the same provision. It is evident that breastfeeding a newborn immediately after birth is very important, and new mothers must pay attention to this issue. (2) It can effectively stimulate the production and secretion of oxytocin and lactogen in the mother’s body, stimulating her to produce milk, and the earlier and more diligent the breastfeeding, the more milk will be secreted. (3) The strong sucking of the newborn can promote the contraction of the uterus, which is of some significance in preventing postpartum bleeding and promoting the restoration of the uterus. (4) It can promote the affection between mother and baby and lay a good foundation for the baby’s later feeding. (5) The milk sucked by the baby early after birth is colostrum, which contains many immune substances that can enhance the baby’s resistance, promote the growth of probiotics in the baby’s intestines, and promote digestion and absorption in newborns. (6) Early contact and early suckling after delivery can promote the affection between mother and baby and lay a good foundation for the baby’s later feeding. (7) Early breastfeeding can prevent neonatal hypoglycemia and reduce the incidence of brain damage due to hypoglycemia.
