On January 11, 2008, the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of our hospital successfully removed a huge chondrosarcoma of 84mm×40mm at the base of the nasal skull with the application of nasal endoscopic technology, which added a new chapter in the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery of our hospital and consolidated its leading position in the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in Lingnan.
The tumor mainly occupied the bilateral nasal cavity, bilateral sieve sinuses, left maxillary sinus, right pterygoid sinus and nasopharyngeal cavity, and the tumor invaded the anterior skull base and the anterior lower wall of the right pterygoid sinus was completely eroded by the tumor.
The surgery was performed under the bright view of the nasal cavity, avoiding the conventional large incision on the face or other parts of the body, reducing tissue damage, shortening the operation time, and less bleeding compared to the traditional operation. More importantly, the anatomical structures are clearly protected and intact, and the tumor is completely removed due to the surgery under clear vision. This not only helps to improve the survival rate of patients, but also improves the quality of life of patients. In addition, this surgical approach has the advantage of shortening the patient’s hospital recovery time and reducing the patient’s cost due to less tissue damage. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the 8th postoperative day.
According to the chief of the department, Chen Shaohua, our otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery department has successfully performed dozens of nasal endoscopic anterior skull base tumor resections, and has accumulated rich surgical experience, which is a rare achievement in the domestic otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery field.
